Response to my discussion: women in Buddhism

To respond to my question, I would probably want to be a woman that practiced Buddhism, as I would like to actively participate in daily activities. For example, women in Buddhism were able to break out of traditional domestic roles and become bodhisattvas, nuns, and here they could be important leaders who were valued. Although women faced subordination to men, they had more rights than men in the long run,

Syncretism

Hannah... I have a question about your descriptiion of Buddhism... you said that the Chinese and pure land people had little interest in learning about buddhism. HOwever, some people were actually open to Buddhist ideas like women who accepted the freedom and independence that buddhism brought.

Response to Hannah's question

Why did Buddhism become so widespread so quickly in the Classical Age? What was it that was so appealing about Buddhism to so many different cultures?

I believe that Buddhism was very appealing to different cultures, especially women, because it offered freedom and independence. Buddhism allowed anyone to achieve enlightenment, or nirvana, both men and women, and as I said before, women could become nuns and bodhisattvas, who were revered greatly.
Another factor leading to the quick spread of Buddhism was that for the most part, other cultures and religions either accepted it or modified it for their own purpose!

Question of the Day

If you were a woman back in ancient times, in which civilization would you want to live and what religion would you want to participate in?
